A sunny Lake Tahoe afternoon turned into a nightmare when a sudden, savage storm transformed a joyful family gathering into one of the deadliest boating accidents in California’s recent history. On a weekend meant to celebrate Paula Bozinovich’s 71st birthday, eight people lost their lives in waters that transformed from calm to catastrophic in less than an hour.
A Family’s Devastating Loss
Josh Pickles, a 37-year-old DoorDash executive, was among those who perished alongside his parents Terry Pickles and Paula Bozinovich. The group was enjoying what was supposed to be a memorable birthday celebration when 8-foot waves and winds up to 45 mph suddenly engulfed their powerboat near D.L. Bliss State Park.
Unexpected Fury of Nature
Coop Cooper, manager of the Camp Richardson marina, described the storm as unprecedented: “I have never seen anything like this in Lake Tahoe”. The rapid transformation from sunny skies to treacherous conditions caught the boaters completely off guard, resulting in a tragedy that claimed eight lives and left families shattered.
Community and Grief
Pickles’s widow, Jordan Sugar-Carlsgaard, who stayed ashore with their 7-month-old daughter, released a heartbreaking statement expressing profound grief. DoorDash’s CFO Ravi Inukonda remembered Josh as an inspirational colleague who “brought a contagious spirit that lifted those around him”.
This incident stands as the deadliest boating accident in Lake Tahoe’s recent history, drawing painful comparisons to the 2019 Conception boat fire that claimed 34 lives. As investigations continue, the community mourns the sudden and unexpected loss of these eight individuals who were simply enjoying a day on the water.
