Trashed Paradise: What's Lurking Beneath Tahoe's Crystal Waters

While snorkeling in Barbados, found a plastic fork sticking out of the sand below. Single-use plastics are littering our world's oceans at an epidemic rate, interacting with ocean life in truly harmful ways. One of the most simple actions you can take at home to save the ocean is to be mindful of your plastic consumption, and opt for re-usable items whenever possible. Ever wonder what dirty secrets are hiding just below Lake Tahoe’s pristine surface? Turns out, our beloved alpine playground is harboring some serious underwater trash that would make any eco-warrior cringe.

The Underwater Wasteland

Colin West, founder of Clean Up The Lake, has been diving deep into the lake’s murky underbelly and uncovering a shocking reality. “When you go 10-15 feet below the surface, it looks closer to one of the dirtiest areas on Highway 80,” West reveals. From vintage car parts to random debris, Tahoe’s lake bottom is essentially an unintentional junkyard.

More Than Just Trash

West’s nonprofit isn’t just collecting garbage, they’re telling a story. Their new docuseries “What Lies Unseen” aims to expose the hidden environmental challenges facing our freshwater ecosystems. By showcasing stunning visuals and the gritty reality of underwater pollution, they’re hoping to spark some serious conversations about our environmental impact.

A Call to Action

The message is clear: what we can’t see can hurt us. Every carelessly discarded can, tire, or random piece of trash doesn’t just disappear, it becomes part of a delicate ecosystem. West and his team are challenging us to think differently about our environmental footprint, one underwater dive at a time.

Catch the full docuseries on YouTube and prepare to have your mind blown by what’s literally beneath the surface.
