Highway Heroes: NDOT's Epic Road Makeover from Stateline to Spooner

chip sealing a road.

Buckle up, Tahoe road warriors, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is about to transform one of our most traveled mountain highways into a silky-smooth ride. From July 28 to August 8, US-50 between Stateline and Spooner Summit is getting a serious glow-up that’ll make your weekend mountain escape way more epic.

The Grinding Zone

Starting Monday, July 28 at 8 p.m., NDOT crews will be performing what they’re calling “bump grinding”, basically a high-tech road massage that smooths out all those annoying pavement irregularities. Think of it like a chiropractic adjustment for highways, eliminating those jarring bumps and dips that can turn your chill road trip into a teeth-chattering adventure.

Paving the Way

The real magic happens from August 3 to 8, when they’ll be laying down a protective asphalt layer that’ll extend the road’s lifespan and make it look chef’s kiss pristine. Pro tip for road trippers: expect lane reductions and slower 35 mph speeds, but at least one lane will stay open in each direction.

What You Need to Know

If you’re living or cruising near the construction zone, here’s the tea: There might be some noise (comparable to a lawn mower), occasional side street access changes, and definitely some travel delays. But trust us, this road work is about making your Tahoe journeys smoother, safer, and way more Instagram-worthy.

Just another example of how we keep Tahoe’s infrastructure as epic as its landscape. Drive safe, mountain fam!
